Ever wanted a s’more in the middle of summer, but not the fire? We used to resort to all kinds of sorcery for a s’more sans fire. We roasted them over the grill, over the gas stove top burners, and when we found out you could make them in the microwave, we were beside ourselves!
Growing up, we went camping a lot, which means we ate a LOT of s’mores. One particular time really stands out: Our brother toasted himself a marshmallow, and just like every ten year old, bashed it up against some of the wood that was burning in the fire. And just like every ten year old, he complained: “ewww there’s ash on my marshmallow!”. Except, he then promptly removed said ash from his marshmallow and ate it before staring at us all in horror at what he had just done.
So, we’ve grown up eating s’mores every summer and we love them and were determined to figure out a way to have these little beauties year round (with or without fire!).
These are perfect for literally anything: birthdays, last minute family get togethers, parties, as a gift for friends, school lunches, you name it, you can take these! They are delicious and not too heavy, perfect for a light dessert! Or snack, or breakfast. We mean, they do have cereal in them after all, that makes them breakfast, right? RIGHT?
These taste exactly like a s’more, except without the ash and you didn’t have to toast 5 marshmallows because they kept falling off your tong things (what are those called again?). Wait you’ve never eaten ash on your marshmallows? Nevermind then…
These treats are graham cracker-y and marshmallow-y with just a hint of chocolate, just like the s’mores we grew up eating!
Do you know what’s even better about these treats? You can feel good about making them because General Mills is working towards sustainable emissions and towards sustainably sourcing their “10 priority ingredients.” Couple that with locally (or sustainably) sourced butter and fair trade chocolate and you have a sustainable and delicious dessert!!!
- 4 tbsp butter
- 4 1/2 cups mini marshmallows divided
- 5 cups Golden Grahams cereal
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips
Butter a 9 inch pan, set aside.
In a saucepan, over medium heat, melt the butter. Once the butter is melted, add 4 cups of the marshmallows and continue cooking until they are completely melted. Remove from the heat.
Mix in the golden grahams cereal. Then, stir in the remaining 1/2 cup of marshmallows. Press firmly into the prepared 9 inch pan
Melt the chocolate chips and drizzle over the top of the treats. Refrigerate for 1 hour before cutting
make sure to press as firmly as you can, this will make sure the bars stay together when you cut them. We used a little parchment paper when pressing on the treats, so it didn't stick to our hands.
