How to Make Chocolate Covered Strawberry Cupcakes

It’s May which means strawberry season is upon us! There’s almost nothing better than eating a freshly picked strawberry that has been warmed by the sun. They taste so much better than store bought ones! When we go strawberry picking we like to do the 2-1 ratio. You know, 2 for my mouth and one for the bucket. 😉 So when you’re done picking all these strawberries what do you do with them? Make Chocolate Covered Strawberry Cupcakes, of course!

The next best thing after a freshly picked strawberry? A chocolate covered one! That’s why this week we’re going to be showing you how to decorate these beauties! A chocolate covered strawberry is an elegant dessert, so you’re cupcakes ought to be elegant as well!

These cupcakes might look difficult to make, but they aren’t! Which is why they are a perfect summer dessert. You can blow everyone away while not having to put long hours in the kitchen when you’d rather be outside enjoying the warm weather! The frosting to cupcake ratio on these cupcakes is perfect. You get a balanced chocolate to strawberry flavor, just like you would in any chocolate dipped strawberry!

For the cupcake recipe, we like to use King Arthur Flour’s Devil Food Cake– it’s the best and we swear by it! (we just got distracted looking for this link & made bread-but we’re back now!)

For the strawberry frosting we used this one by Sally’s Baking Addiction. Her recipe calls for freeze dried strawberries, which we think makes the frosting taste exactly like a strawberry! For freeze dried strawberries we recommend Natierra. We love this company and we’ve used their freeze dried raspberries when we made Raspberry Cookies a year ago.



Chocolate Covered Strawberry Cupcakes

Combine the best of summer- strawberries- and the best dessert- chocolate- and you get one delicious dessert that will blow away your friends and family while still being easy to whip up without trouble!

Servings 12 cupcakes


  • 12 strawberries
  • 12 oz chocolate
  • white chocolate optional
  • 12 chocolate cupcakes
  • 1 batch strawberry frosting


  1. Start by melting your chocolate and dipping the strawberries. Dip them by holding them by their greens and dunking them into the melted chocolate, coming up the strawberry about 3/4 of the way. Allow the excess chocolate to drip off and place on wax paper to set. Once they are set, drizzle with white chocolate, if you desire.

  2. To decorate, frost each cupcake by putting the frosting into a piping bag fitted with a Wilton number 2D tip. Start in the middle of the cup cake and pipe a dollop of frosting. Then, begin on the edge of the cupcake and pipe around and up until it reaches a peak.

  3. Once all the cupcakes are frosted, top with the chocolate covered strawberries.
